Music Program

Instrumental Music | Songwriting and Music Production

The Music Program at Brighton Secondary College offers students a vibrant mix of instrumental, vocal, and creative music opportunities. Students can learn an instrument or voice through our Instrumental Music Program, which focuses on ensemble performance and musicianship.

We’ve recently expanded our program to include two complementary streams — Songwriting and Music Production — allowing students to explore self-directed projects, develop creative skills, and continue their musical journey into VCE.

Learning an instrument or engaging in music creation helps students build discipline, confidence, concentration, and resilience. It also fosters teamwork and connection through our many ensembles and bands, which perform throughout the year.

Tuition is available for a wide range of instruments, including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, violin, viola, cello, double bass, percussion, voice, bass guitar, and electric guitar. Weekly lessons run on a rotating timetable to minimise classroom disruption, and all participating students join at least one ensemble.

Songwriting and Music Production

Songwriting helps students develop skills in piano, voice, and guitar while exploring lyric writing, composition, and arrangement. Students create and perform their own songs and have the opportunity to record their original works.

Music Production introduces students to audio engineering, recording, and mixing using industry-standard software such as Pro Tools, Logic, GarageBand, and Ableton. Students learn recording techniques, sound design, and how to operate analog and digital audio equipment to produce professional-quality music.

Basketball Academy

Established in partnership with Chase Basketball in 2024, the Brighton Secondary College Basketball Academy is an extra-curricular program designed to develop the skills and potential of student athletes at all levels.

Open to all Brighton Secondary College students, the Academy provides expert coaching and a supportive environment that promotes growth, teamwork, and resilience. Athletes are assessed and grouped into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels to ensure individual progression and ongoing enjoyment.

Training sessions are held before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 90 minutes. While the primary focus is on improving basketball skills, coaches also emphasise fitness, sportsmanship, teamwork, dedication, and a strong work ethic — values that extend beyond the court. Students benefit from high-quality instruction delivered by elite coaches, helping them build confidence, skill, and passion for the game.
