Library run programs
During the year the library facilitates many programs. The
Year 7 students receive a detailed orientation program at the start of their life at Brighton Secondary College.
Information skills are taught via their first Humanities assignment.
Literature Circles and Silent Reading are a focus for Year 7.
As part of their preparation for VCE English, students receive detailed instruction on using online research tools.
Throughout the year various classes receive lessons on referencing and bibliography.
During lunchtimes students play chess, complete homework or participate in recreational reading.
Lunchtimes are a busy place in the library, the students enjoy the relaxed atmosphere where they can lounge on the couches and chat and read magazines.
Chess is always popular and we hold a tournament during book week.
There is often a jigsaw puzzle going where anyone can have a go.
The Library arranges an annual excursion to 'The Melbourne Writers' Festival'. All year levels are encouraged to come along. Numbers are limited.
Visits to the local cinema are arranged when a new highly anticipated film is released. Numbers are limited.
The Readers' Cup.
Sponsored by the Brighton SC PFA.
Since 2007, we have held a 'Readers' Cup' event. This is an extra curricular event for Year 7 and 8 students. Teams of 4 students read the same 4 novels and then compete in a quiz night in front of family and friends. The teams must also prepare a creative piece such as a video, play or book trailer.
All team members receive a novel. The winning team receives individual medals and their names inscribed on the Cup which is on display in the Library.
The College has an enthusiastic student Library Committee whose members run the annual short story writing competition and activities during book week.
They also hold a weekly quiz competition. They also run the circulation desk at recess and lunch.
The library uses Bibliotech which is available school-wide on the College intranet.
